I thought this was an ARG the first time I found it browsing Neocities. An excellent work. Was Mindy Seu your teacher?

Somewhere between an ARG and whatever this world is we're living in, I suppose. Mindy was not my teacher, but her work was well celebrated in much of my academic involvement.

I have seen this project develop for probably about the span of a year, and it is quite wonderful what people can do. And it has been amazing and quite swell seeing all the effort that has been put into a hobby project. And seeing it grow in real time is quite a spectical. I remember when winchat had no bubble, no clippy, and no Tetris or tuts tomb. back in my day... , anyway this is quite fun and I spend too much time on win99. - Puppeto <3

Ah. So the accounts are not saved to a server and you can’t get back into a created account without downloading your session. Well anyways pretty cool mock-up! The data bridge is pretty useful too! You did a good job with this!

Thank you Mario. None of your data is saved outside of the computer. If you are curious about what data does get sent, you can view the Terms of Agreement. Also, you might check out Display Properties->Wallpapers->Wetdry if you want a subtle nod at Super Mario 64.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. If you cleared cache, everything should be in working order. You could try also hard-refreshing your browser Ctrl+Shift+R or F5. Let me know if your problem is fixed.

How do you get back into a created account? Without downloading a saved version. And if this feature doesn’t exist, in the next version could you have that available so you can type your username in and passcode to get in that way?

Not entirely sure what you mean. You can make a backup of your profile and import it. All accounts are localized to your browser session (unless exported), and all accounts actually share the same data. So if you have multiple accounts on one browser, the files and folders will be the same.

Awesome! Shame Half-Life crashes if you fiddle with it too much~

It's a memory leak issue that we never resolved, so we just threw a BSOD over it, seemed funny at the time. It may be fixed soon enough. Thanks for commenting :)

Wow!!!!!!!! This was a super fun blast from the past. I changed the background to space, played a game of solitaire with the spooky background, and made some art in Paint for old time's sake. I tried to look at some ebay listings, but the dial up wasn't working so I'll have to try again later after mom gets off the phone. Seriously amazing job. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into this project.

This is a very useful learning experience to those who weren't around when Windows was a lot lighter than it is now. I was around when Windows 98/ME was considered the latest offerings from Microsoft, when the interface had a more serious tone to it before XP started to take that style in a different direction. Even after my first experience with Windows XP in 2002, I always preferred the simplicity of how Windows 9x looked and functioned by comparison for being a general no-nonsense interface. Great work so far, and I look forward to seeing what you do with this in the future!

Same! While I absolutely love Windows XP, there is something absolutely straight forward and non-nonsense about the NT/9X suite. Trying to bridge them together in a parafictional way has given me the most delightful pursuit, and I've learned a lot about what we've lost in UI/UX, specifically after the dominance of the smart phone. I'm hoping a new release will be ready very soon, keep on checking back!

Quick question what is the admin user on the website and are users able to access it?

Replied on: September 18, 2026 at 2:35:46 AM

It's a mystery!

this is the most impressive project i've ever seen, i almost don't believe my eyes at how accurate and detailed this is. in fact it's so impressive that it also motivated me to learn a bit about react since i've been making stuff on vanilla html+css for so long so thank you for that

Replied on: September 2, 2026 at 5:14:17 PM

So glad to hear that! There are some fantastic boilerplates out there to help you get started with React. Windows 99 actually runs on Preact: itshares a similar architecture, but its lightweight footprint made it a bit more ideal for building a web OS.
